This condo renovation for two art collectors is a minimal backdrop, where cabinetry
and even ductwork becomes works of art. With a nod to the artist Gorden Matta-Clarke,
the existing dropped ceiling over the kitchen and surrounding walls were removed
exposing the concrete slab above, the ac ductwork, the electrical chase and panel.
The new terrazzo floor, which is throughout the apartment, is the color of beach
sand and has within it sweeping zinc strips that crisscross the apartment regardless
of walls. This play between memory and intervention extends even to the walls of
the living room where the first layer of the former metallic and paper wallpaper
was partially removed leaving only pieces of the metallic backing creating a beautiful
textured effect. The bathroom walls are covered with honed limestone slabs.
