Biography
William Lane studied sculpture and architecture at the School of Art and Architecture at The Cooper Union in NY and the Architectural Association in London under Hans Haacke, John Hedjuk, Peter Eisenman, and Rem Koolhaas. As a student he began his involvement with the NY art world as an assistant to several artists, including Dennis Oppenheim, Alan Sonfist, and Robert Wilson.

After graduating with a degree in architecture he spent the following five years working in the offices of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson in New York and I.M. Pei and Partners in New York.

Between 1980 and 1985 he was an active participant in New York’s emerging architectural community and exhibited several theoretical studies and proposals at the Storefront for Art and Architecture, including a large scale installation at Battery Park City. He received research grants from the NY State Grants to the Arts Program and the Gulf and Western Corporation.

Following an Artist in Residency with Gulf and Western at the Fundacion Altos de Chavon, Dominican Republic, William Lane opened a base of operations in the US Virgin Islands in 1987, where he designed the 250 room Elysian Spa and Resort, a residence and retreat for a TV producer/filmmaker and his family, as well as several other resort and residential projects.

In 1992, William Lane Architects moved to its current location in Miami Beach, FL. Mr. Lane achieved almost instant prominence with the series of five individually designed lifeguard stands on South Beach. The lifeguard stands have received international press coverage and have received awards from the American Institute of Architecture, the City of Miami Beach, and the Miami Beach Development Corporation.

Projects recently completed or currently in progress include the public areas of 1674 Meridian Avenue for Starwood Urban Investments (commercial/office), the restoration and expansion of 825 Lincoln Road (commercial/retail), Cisneros Television Group Offices (corporate interior), Kevin Bruk Gallery, and several private residences.
